Elisabeth Ross, a dedicated aid worker from Scotland, was reported missing after her whereabouts became unknown. Her body was eventually located on July 18 at a derelict building site in the Greek capital. Authorities believe the suspect placed Ross inside a suitcase following her death and concealed it at the construction location before it was discovered by a passerby.

Investigation Developments and Suspect Background

Police identified the suspect through surveillance camera footage that captured a man pushing a large suitcase near the discovery site. George Kalliakmanis, who leads the Union of Police Officers of Southeast Attica, confirmed that investigators tracked the suspect’s movements leading up to the discovery of Ross’s body.

The accused has a background in boxing and achieved recognition in Greek national competitions. CNN Greece noted that he married an American citizen in 2023, and the couple shares one child. The couple also established a non-governmental organization focused on supporting refugees in Greece that same year.

Kalliakmanis explained that several questions remain unresolved regarding the circumstances of Ross’s death. Investigators are examining how the suspect gained access to Ross’s apartment and whether she opened the door for him or if he possessed a key to the residence.

Financial and Digital Evidence

During his initial court appearance, the suspect acknowledged using Ross’s bank card to withdraw approximately 10,000 euros, equivalent to roughly $11,500. Police also discovered that Ross’s mobile phone continued to send messages after her death, with someone appearing to communicate from her account. These messages ceased once her body was found.

The suspect’s wife provided crucial information to authorities following the discovery of Ross’s remains. She reported that a location-sharing application used by the couple indicated her husband was present in Ross’s apartment during the evening of July 15 and into the early morning hours of July 16. Despite this revelation, she did not immediately question him about his presence at the location.

Kalliakmanis stated that investigators have found no evidence suggesting the suspect’s wife participated in Ross’s death. The wife’s cooperation has been valuable in establishing the timeline of events surrounding the incident.

An preliminary coroner’s examination has not yet determined a definitive cause of death for Elisabeth Ross. However, asphyxiation remains a possibility that cannot be excluded from consideration, according to Kalliakmanis. The suspect appeared briefly in court on Wednesday before returning for a more substantial hearing on Thursday.

The Afghan national departed his home country at age 15 and arrived in Greece in 2016. He and his spouse established their refugee support organization in 2023, and authorities are currently investigating whether the suspect knew Ross through their shared work supporting displaced persons in Greece.

Police Scotland has provided assistance with the investigation. A spokesperson for the Scottish force confirmed they are aware of the death of a Scottish woman in Athens and are coordinating with Greek authorities. Officers are also providing support to Ross’s family in Scotland during this difficult period.

The case has drawn attention to the complex dynamics of international communities in Athens, where refugees, aid workers, and expatriates intersect.
