What makes the Missouri 1st District race particularly notable is the opportunity for voters to evaluate two distinct governing philosophies side by side. Bush, who unseated the long-serving Lacy Clay in 2020, has consistently embraced a confrontational style. Her activism became immediately visible when she slept on the Capitol steps to protest the expiration of a federal eviction moratorium.

Her willingness to challenge party leadership extended to her vote against the bipartisan infrastructure bill, joining five other progressive lawmakers who opposed the measure in hopes of advancing President Joe Biden’s broader social spending agenda.

Financial Backing and Political Evolution

Bell, a former prosecutor in St. Louis County, managed to defeat Bush in the 2024 primary race. His campaign benefited significantly from $8.5 million in support from the United Democracy Project, a super PAC connected to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Campaign finance documentation indicates this organization has contributed over $3 million toward Bell’s current reelection effort.

Bush’s return to the race coincides with a broader surge of far-left Democrats who have achieved surprising primary victories nationwide. Organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America and Justice Democrats have championed challenges against moderate Democrats who accept corporate political action committee contributions.

“Cori Bush was the model for what it looks like to be a fighter for your community as a member of Congress,” said Usamah Andrabi, a spokesperson for Justice Democrats, referring to Bush as the group’s inaugural recruit.

From Ferguson to Washington: A Shared Origin Story

The political trajectories of both candidates trace back to the same pivotal moment in 2014, when Michael Brown, an unarmed Black teenager, was fatally shot by a police officer in Ferguson. The subsequent protests against police brutality catalyzed both of their political careers.

Bell entered local politics by winning a seat on the Ferguson City Council in 2015. By 2018, he had defeated the county prosecutor who chose not to bring charges against the officer involved in Brown’s death. Bush, meanwhile, lost her first congressional primary to Clay in 2018 before ultimately succeeding in 2020, becoming the first Black Lives Matter organizer elected to Congress.

Her activism in Washington quickly produced results. Following her eviction protest, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a temporary order halting evictions in counties experiencing high rates of Covid-19 transmission.

Despite setbacks two years ago when Bush and former New York Representative Jamaal Bowman both lost to candidates backed by the United Democracy Project, Bush remains optimistic about the movement’s growth. “We may have lost the seats, but we didn’t lose, because the movement grew quickly,” she reflected. “One of the things that was very tough when I was in Congress last time was that there just was not enough of us … but now we have a new team.”
