Chris Mason: How Lammy and Vance’s unlikely friendship is being leveraged

The Unlikely Bond Between Lammy and Vance: A Strategic Asset for the UK Government?

Deputy Prime Minister’s Diplomatic Engagements

Donald Trump’s public attacks on the UK prime minister have persisted for weeks, with Sir Keir Starmer countering the US leader’s remarks in various forums. Yet, an unexpected camaraderie between the two nations’ key deputies continues to thrive, as recent interactions suggest. David Lammy, who serves as both deputy prime minister and justice secretary, has met separately with US Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House. Each session lasted about 45 minutes, focusing on ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. While the foreign secretary role is now held by Yvette Cooper, the UK government appears to be capitalizing on Lammy’s personal rapport with Vance to ease diplomatic tensions.

The Origins of a Unique Alliance

The connection between the two officials began during Lammy’s time as an opposition member, when Vance was newly elected to the Senate. Last summer, Vance and his family stayed at Lammy’s country home in Kent, Chevening, during their UK visit. Posting on X, Lammy wrote, “Great to catch up with my friend JD Vance today in DC following his talks in Pakistan.” Above a picture of the two men shaking hands, he added:

“It is vital that the ceasefire continues and we get shipping flowing freely again through the Straits of Hormuz. We continue to work together towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

The Prime Minister’s Public Stance

Sir Keir Starmer has reiterated his criticism of Trump’s rhetoric, particularly the claim that a “whole civilisation will die tonight.” Addressing MPs, he emphasized, “In relation to the language about destroying a civilisation, could I really be clear with this House – that was wrong. A threat to Iranian civilians in that way is wrong. These are civilians, let’s remember, who’ve suffered immeasurable harm by the regime in Iran for many, many, long years, and that’s why they’re words and phrases that I would never use on behalf of this government, which is guided by our principles and our values throughout all this.”

Starmer also expressed frustration with both Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating, “I am fed up with the fact that families across the country see their bills go up and down… because of the actions of Putin or Trump.” Additionally, he confirmed the UK’s decision to avoid involvement in America’s blockade of Iranian ports, highlighting a divergence in policy approaches.

Political Dynamics and Personal Rapprochement

Despite Trump’s ongoing jabs at the prime minister, including his remark that the PM “is not Winston Churchill,” the UK’s diplomatic strategy benefits from the warm relationship between Lammy and Vance. Their friendship, which dates back to Lammy’s days as an opposition MP, contrasts with the cooler dynamics between their leaders, underscoring the value of personal ties in navigating international relations.
