“We have already met and exceeded all Military objectives,” Trump stated on Truth Social, outlining his agreement to “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks” in exchange for Iran allowing ship movements through the critical waterway.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, acting as a mediator, declared the ceasefire effective immediately on Wednesday. The accord includes Iran’s commitment to coordinate vessel passage through the strait, a vital artery for Gulf oil exports. However, the deal does not address ongoing conflicts in Lebanon, where Israel maintains ground forces.
Iran’s 10-Point Plan and Political Gains
Iran has outlined a comprehensive 10-point proposal, which encompasses halting hostilities in Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen, lifting economic sanctions, releasing frozen assets held by the US, and compensating for reconstruction costs. The country also pledged to refrain from pursuing nuclear weapons. Tehran emphasized that its military successes would be reinforced through political negotiations, as stated by its Supreme National Security Council.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed support for the ceasefire, stating it applies only if Iran opens the straits and halts attacks on the US and regional allies. He noted that the agreement does not extend to Lebanon, where Israel’s military presence remains. The ceasefire’s effectiveness in the region is still uncertain, given Israel’s prior stance on eliminating Hezbollah.
Immediate Reactions and Unresolved Tensions
Shortly after the announcement, Israeli air defenses intercepted missiles launched from Iran, prompting sirens and loud explosions in Jerusalem. Despite the ceasefire, tensions persist as both nations hold divergent views on its scope and implications. The US and Iran have previously engaged in two rounds of talks this year, each ending with rising military hostilities.
White House officials confirmed ongoing discussions about in-person negotiations but stressed that no final decisions have been made. Pakistan has invited representatives to meet in Islamabad on Friday to pursue a lasting resolution.
