Inside London’s Albanian ‘Mafia’ who bring fear to community dubbed ‘Little Tirana’

Nestled in a serene, green area of North London, a covert web of illicit activities led by Albanian nationals is quietly shaping the local landscape. The Southgate London Underground station serves as a focal point for this organized network, which extends its influence across the bustling suburb.

According to sources, the community has become a stronghold for these criminals, who enforce their dominance through intimidation and the looming threat of severe retaliation. Local businesses, including restaurants, now face demands for financial protection or risk being taken over by the Albanian mob.

Flamur Beqiri, a 39-year-old drug trafficker, was killed on Christmas Eve in 2019 in Battersea, southwest London. His murder, orchestrated by a rival, highlights how the Albanian criminal network’s reach stretches beyond Southgate. Beqiri’s sister, Misse, gained notoriety for her role in The Real Housewives of Cheshire.

“The Albanian gangs have a strong grip on the community, and many fear for their safety,” said one anonymous informant. “They operate from cafes and streets, blending into daily life while controlling key businesses. The police have been informed, but action is still needed to curb their spread.”

While the Turkish ‘Mafia’ dominates areas like Tottenham and Wood Green, Southgate and Cockfosters see the Albanian network exerting its power. The two groups rarely conflict, as the Turks apprehend the Albanians’ capacity for brutal force.

A shopkeeper in the area described the shift in atmosphere since the Albanians arrived. “I’ve been here over two decades, and the community was peaceful until recently,” he said. “Now, they pressure businesses to close or take over. Greek Cypriot owners, in particular, feel vulnerable and powerless.”

Law enforcement has targeted Ashfield Parade as a key location for the gang. In 2023, Arlin Leka, an Albanian people smuggler, was sentenced after convictions for illegally transporting men from his homeland to the UK. Additional raids have also been conducted on nearby premises, revealing persistent concerns about gang activity.

The community’s fear is palpable, with some residents hesitant to voice dissent. “They’ve taken over shops and threatened others,” another source explained. “Sometimes they pay individuals to stage vandalism or fights, creating an environment where business owners feel compelled to comply.”

With their operations growing, the Albanian mob is increasingly seen as a force that is reshaping the neighborhood. As a loyal Metro reader, we ensure you stay updated with the latest news, whether it’s political developments, live sports, or celebrity insights.
