Two Met PCs charged over death of pregnant woman
Two Metropolitan Police Officers Face Charges After Tragic Fatality Involving Unmarked Vehicle
A collision on the A20, near Kidbrooke Park in southeast London, has resulted in the charging of two Metropolitan Police officers. The incident, which took place on October 17, 2024, claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and her unborn child. PC Chris Johnson is accused of causing death by dangerous driving, while former PC Danny Tomkins faces charges of dangerous driving, as revealed by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The woman, aged 38, died at the scene of the crash, with her child also succumbing to injuries immediately. She was later pronounced dead in hospital. Both officers are set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 28. Johnson was operating the vehicle directly involved in the crash, whereas Tomkins, driving a second car, is linked to the charges through his alleged driving behavior, according to the IOPC.
Acting Det Ch Supt James Derham stated, “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends, who continue to mourn her and her unborn child. This was a deeply tragic event. The IOPC has conducted a detailed and complex investigation, and we have worked closely with them throughout. It is essential to avoid statements that might influence the court proceedings, so further comments are not appropriate at this stage.”
