Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis disclosed at a Monday news conference that Ryder Harrington and Savitha Shan were the individuals killed during a bar shooting early Sunday. The incident, which left 14 others injured, occurred near a well-known beer garden in the city’s downtown area. The suspect, later fatally shot by law enforcement, was identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a Senegalese national and U.S. citizen residing in Pflugerville. Authorities are still exploring potential motives, including the possibility of terrorism.

Shooter’s Background and Actions

Diagne, according to law enforcement sources, appeared to act independently and had no known connections to the state. He wore a sweatshirt with “Property of Allah” and an Iranian-themed shirt during the attack. The firearms used were legally purchased in San Antonio in 2017, as confirmed by Davis. No prior threats were linked to the suspect, she noted.

Victims’ Lives and Family Reactions

“Ryder was the best mix of all the Harrington crew,” his brother Reed Harrington wrote on Facebook, acknowledging his loss. “It is unfair, to say the least, that my little brother was only given 19 years on this earth.”

Harrington, a 19-year-old Texas Tech University student, was remembered by his siblings and a local politician through social media posts. His sister Reagan Harrington called him her “best friend,” expressing disbelief at his passing. “Nothing would be enough to express how special you are to me,” she added, while Ryan Harrington, another sibling, shared his grief on Instagram: “I’m gonna miss my brother.”

Fraternity and Community Support

The Beta Theta Pi fraternity confirmed Harrington’s death, noting his role in the fall 2024 pledge class. “From the moment he joined our brotherhood, he brought a light that was impossible to ignore,” the chapter’s Instagram post stated. They are organizing a candlelight vigil on Monday at 8 p.m. and have launched a GoFundMe campaign for his family.

State Representative’s Tribute

State House Speaker Dustin Burrows shared condolences on X, highlighting Harrington’s relationship with a team member. “From all accounts, Ryder was exactly the kind of young man who made a difference without even trying,” Burrows wrote. He praised his “life, loyalty, pride as a Red Raider, and dedication to others,” while expressing hope for the family’s recovery.

Injury Details and Ongoing Investigations

Robert Luckritz, head of the county’s emergency medical services, reported that three of the 14 injured were hospitalized in critical condition. Davis announced that one of these patients will be removed from life support later Monday, though the other two remain in serious condition. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with officials continuing to analyze evidence. Diagne’s immigration history includes a B-2 tourist visa entry in 2000 and naturalization in 2006 through marriage to a U.S. citizen.
