Four arrested over murder of Scottish businessman in Kenya

Four Men Charged in Connection with Scottish Businessman’s Murder in Kenya

Arrests Linked to Fatal Attack

Four individuals were apprehended in relation to the killing of Campbell Scott, a 58-year-old Scottish executive, whose remains were uncovered in a sack within Makongo Forest. The body was discovered approximately 60 miles (96.5km) from Nairobi, where Scott had been residing at the time of his death on 24 February last year.

Investigation and Operations

The suspects were captured during a coordinated intelligence operation in Ukunda, a coastal community situated roughly 16 miles (25.8km) south of Mombasa. This follow-up action was prompted by an ongoing inquiry into a violent robbery involving an American citizen near Nyali. Scott, originally from Dunfermline in Fife, was a senior director at the credit scoring firm FICO.

He had traveled to Nairobi for a professional gathering before vanishing. Scott was last seen at Havana nightclub the night prior to his disappearance. Kenyan authorities later stated that he was believed to have been taken to a property in the Pipeline district, a slum area about 9.3 miles (15km) from his hotel.

Forensic Evidence and Injuries

His corpse was found in a pineapple sack, with hands tied, in Makongo Forest. A post-mortem examination yielded inconclusive results, yet pathologists noted that the injuries were not severe enough to account for his death. Initially, police questioned two men—a taxi operator and a nightclub attendant—thought to have seen Scott alive.

Two individuals were detained in March last year, with one appearing in court charged with murder. Further inquiries led to the identification of three additional suspects. In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) highlighted that these new suspects were connected to Scott’s murder and several violent robberies.

“An operation was executed by DCI officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CR&IB) Headquarters, collaborating with teams from SCCIO Nyali and SCCIO Msambweni (Ukunda).”

The suspects apprehended at Ideal Apartments in Ukunda, including Bernard Mbusu, Isaac Kinoti Kobia, Evans Muthengi Mutaki, and Kelvin Mwangi Njoroge, were also tied to a separate robbery incident in Watamu, Malindi Sub-County. During a search of their residence, authorities recovered stolen goods such as an HP laptop, mobile phones, foreign currencies, credit cards, cheque books, and PDQ card reader devices.
