Balamory is back – Miss Hoolie and PC Plum lift the lid on what to expect
Balamory Returns: A Nostalgic Revival with New Adventures
The beloved children’s show Balamory, which once captured the hearts of millions, is making a comeback this April. After over two decades since its finale on CBeebies, the series will return with fresh episodes, and some of its original stars are once again stepping into iconic roles. Julie Wilson Nimmo, who portrayed Miss Hoolie, shares the excitement of this revival. “People have asked me that same question for 20 years, practically every day,” she says. For many, the show’s memorable catchphrase instantly evokes childhood memories of its vibrant island community, where problem-solving and camaraderie were central to the narrative.
A Warm Welcome for a Familiar Fix
Wilson Nimmo and Andrew Agnew, known for his role as PC Plum, are thrilled to reunite for the new series. Agnew calls it “an honour to be back doing something we love so much,” while Wilson Nimmo highlights the “new stories” as a highlight. Both hope the show’s charm will connect with a new generation of young viewers. “Children are surrounded by so much animation these days,” Wilson Nimmo notes. “But it’s rare for a show to feature kids on the telly watching other kids, which is what Balamory does.”
A Global Legacy Rekindled
The revival comes amid challenges for UK children’s programming, as a BBC report warned of a decline in homegrown content. Despite this, Balamory’s international appeal remains strong. The show was broadcast in Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, and South Africa, earning global recognition. Wilson Nimmo recalls becoming friends with the Australian music group The Wiggles during a visit, while Agnew shares a memorable moment in Turkey when children shouted, “You’re PC Plum” while he was in swimwear.
Emotional Reunion and Modern Twists
The cast’s first script read-through was an emotional experience. Wilson Nimmo describes the moment as “pretty emotional,” with the revival feeling like a “love letter to the original.” The scripts reignited nostalgia, as the show’s signature songs were played, reminding fans of its enduring charm. Agnew jokes about the songs still being sung to him by fans, adding, “That’s lovely and I wouldn’t change that for the world, but it doesn’t go away.”
New Faces, Same Spirit
While some original cast members are absent, new characters are introduced to keep the series fresh. Dr Ollie (Carl Spencer), a vet with his two children, and The Harbourmaster (William Andrews) join the island. The original inventor Archie, played by Miles Jupp, is not returning, but Ava Potts (Danielle Jam), a new resident inventor, steps into his shoes. The pair confirms the addition of new songs, which have been modernized while retaining their core charm. “They’ve been revamped a wee bit,” Agnew says, “but the essence of the original remains intact.”
Produced by Lion Television Scotland, the revival includes two series of 10 episodes each. Balamory debuts on CBeebies on Monday, 20th April, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer the same day. The show’s return promises to blend nostalgia with innovation, offering a fresh take on a classic formula.
