Tributes After British Teenager Dies in Vietnam
A 19-year-old British woman, Orla Wates, has tragically lost her life while on a trip to Vietnam. The incident occurred during a road accident along the Ha Giang Loop, a popular mountain route in the northern part of the country. According to local reports, she was riding on the back of a motorcycle when she fell from the vehicle.
Organ Donation as a Final Gesture
Orla was taken to Hanoi’s Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, where she passed away on 2 April. Her parents were present at the time of her death. Her mother, Henrietta Wates, shared her thoughts with Viet Nam News, highlighting Orla’s vibrant personality and passion for life. “She was beautiful, independent, and very funny, with a sharp wit,” Henrietta said. “She loved to look good and lived life to the full.”
Orla’s family chose to donate her organs, believing it was the most meaningful way to honor her legacy. “Knowing that she is living on through them brings us great comfort,” Henrietta added.
The hospital confirmed that Orla’s organs were given to five critically ill Vietnamese patients. A representative noted, “In the face of profound grief, her family made a deeply compassionate decision that transcended nationality and race—giving others a chance at life.”
Support from UK Authorities
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Orla Wates, following her tragic death in Vietnam.” The FCDO assured that they were in contact with local officials and providing support to the family during this challenging period.
Orla’s father, Andrew Wates, also emphasized the significance of her decision. “She adored Vietnam, and giving back to the nation was very important to us,” he said.
Vietnam’s Road Safety Challenges
The Ha Giang Loop, a 350km journey through rugged northern terrain, is often recommended for guided motorcycle tours, especially for those without experience. However, Vietnam’s road network remains a concern, with over 10,000 deaths and 16,000 injuries reported in traffic accidents during 2024.
