Ex-Player Barton Refutes Allegations of Golf Club Assault

Joey Barton, a former professional footballer, has rejected claims of attacking a man at a golf club in Merseyside. The 43-year-old, hailing from Widnes, was again placed in custody following a court appearance via video link at Liverpool Crown Court. This comes after his bail was rejected in a prior hearing at a magistrates’ court.

Barton faces a seven-day trial beginning on 1 September, alongside Gary O’Grady, 50, who is also charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. The incident, which occurred on 8 March, is alleged to have taken place at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club, where the defendants were reportedly drinking with Kevin Lynch, 51, a former non-league football manager and founder of NexGen Academy, a special education institution.

According to court testimony, Lynch sustained severe injuries to his eye during the alleged altercation. O’Grady, who attended the hearing, chose not to plead at this stage.

Barton, known for his playing career with teams such as Manchester City, Newcastle United, QPR, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille, also managed Fleetwood Town. His legal proceedings continue as the trial approaches, with the court yet to determine his fate.
