According to Dean Crispen, the fire chief for San Francisco, first responders arrived at the location close to Alcatraz Island to discover a massive three-level pontoon boat nearly submerged. The engine continued to run despite the vessel sinking, and fuel was observed leaking into the surrounding water. Initially, reports suggested a fire might be the cause of the distress, but officials later clarified that there was no evidence of flames present on the deck. Videos captured at the scene depicted numerous boats deploying to assist passengers who had been on the sinking craft, with various objects floating in the water nearby.

Rescue Operations and Search

By the evening hours, the focus shifted to locating the missing passengers in the open ocean waters situated west of the Golden Gate Bridge. This extensive operation included the deployment of divers, aerial support from helicopters, and multiple rescue boats. Officials indicated that this search effort would persist throughout the night as conditions remained challenging. Authorities initially reported two individuals missing but revised that figure to three after receiving additional testimony from witnesses at the scene. Chief Crispen noted that the team was currently operating in full rescue mode. Three passengers who sustained injuries while falling overboard were transported to a local medical facility and are anticipated to be discharged by Tuesday night.

Eyewitness Accounts and Timeline

Aaron Anfinson, the captain of the Bass-Tub, shared his experience with the San Francisco Chronicle. He explained that his vessel was navigating toward the bridge in somewhat rough conditions when a man on a nearby smaller boat signaled for help. The man pointed toward a pontoon in the center of the bay that seemed to be engulfed in flames. By the time the Bass-Tub arrived at the location, the apparent fire had extinguished, but the pontoon was rapidly sinking. Some people were already in the water while others remained aboard, Anfinson said, adding that they tried to hand out life jackets to the passengers.

“We figured we would get her first,” Anfinson said, referring to a woman with a head injury. He described the chaotic scene where some passengers were already swimming while others clung to the sinking structure.

A deckhand on the Bass-Tub lowered a swim ladder and tossed a life ring to assist the injured woman. Anfinson expressed his concern, stating, “It was scary. I don’t want to see anybody in that situation.” The boat was approximately 600 yards away from Alcatraz when the emergency call was received just past 3:30 p.m. Crispen mentioned that the vessel was believed to have launched near the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, though a representative at the club had no further details regarding the accident.

Victims and Aftermath

All rescued individuals were transported to Gashouse Cove Marina, a small harbor in the city. The deceased individual was successfully pulled from the freezing water by rescue teams but unfortunately passed away later. Additionally, a dog that was aboard the sunken vessel also perished. Live footage captured the emotional scene, showing survivors wrapped in blankets sitting on a curb before moving toward an ambulance. A yellow tarp concealed a body on the dock. The Coast Guard and Oakland police department contributed to the rescue efforts, as noted by Fire Lt. Mariano Elias.
