South Carolina governor selects Darline Graham Nordone, Lindsey Graham’s sister, to finish his Senate term
South Carolina Governor Names Lindsey Graham’s Sister to Complete Senate Term
South Carolina governor selects Darline Graham – South Carolina’s governor, Henry McMaster, has officially selected Darline Graham Nordone, the sibling of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, to occupy the Republican seat that has been held for decades. This appointment comes following the unexpected passing of Graham over the weekend, creating an opportunity for family continuity in the state’s congressional representation. Nordone expressed deep emotion during a press gathering held on Monday afternoon alongside the governor.
“Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him,” Nordone stated at the news conference. “It is such a privilege to get to finish some of his important work, and I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and carry forward the efforts of my brother on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina and the United States.”
She continued with a personal message to her brother, saying, “To Lindsey, I miss you more than I can even put into words. But I’m going to do this. I got it.” Her words reflected both grief and determination as she stepped into this significant role.
Legal Framework and Election Timeline
Under South Carolina state statutes, the governor possesses the authority to designate a temporary substitute for the vacant Senate position. However, because Graham was scheduled to face reelection in the current year, his passing triggers an accelerated primary contest designed to place a new candidate on the November ballot. According to an official statement released by McMaster’s office, this special primary election is set for August 11.
The governor explained that he reached out to Nordone early Sunday morning to request her service. “I was humbled by your quickness to see the duty that you had to serve,” McMaster remarked while introducing his appointee. He further noted that he contacted President Donald Trump, a longtime political ally of Graham, following their discussion. “And he thought it was a great idea,” McMaster added.
Earlier Monday, Trump publicly stated that he had recommended Nordone’s appointment to the Republican governor “as a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly.”
Political Support and Background
Senate Majority Leader John Thune provided additional validation for the selection. Speaking with CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday, Thune revealed that he had conversed with both Nordone and McMaster. “I’ll let the governor make an announcement about that, but that certainly in my view makes a lot of sense,” he observed, expressing confidence that Nordone would receive widespread backing. Following the press conference, Thune took to social media platform X to praise the decision: “Lindsey’s legacy will continue through Darline, and I look forward to welcoming her soon.”
Nordine, aged 62, brings substantial public service experience to the position despite never having held elected office previously. She currently serves as a commissioner for the South Carolina Commission for the Blind and has dedicated considerable time to assisting individuals with disabilities throughout her career. Her educational background includes graduation from the College of Charleston, and she maintains residence in Lexington, South Carolina.
A Lifelong Bond
The Graham siblings shared an exceptionally close relationship throughout their lives. In a 2015 interview conducted after Lindsey Graham announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination, his sister recalled their childhood. “Even when my parents were alive, they worked really long, hard hours running a small business. So even then, he was a caregiver to me,” she explained.
The siblings grew up in a single room located behind the Sanitary Cafe, which functioned as a bar, pool hall, and liquor store operated by their parents in Central, South Carolina. Tragedy struck when their parents passed away within fifteen months of one another, leaving Darline orphaned at thirteen years old in 1976. Graham, who became the first member of his family to pursue higher education and served in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, assumed legal guardianship of his younger sister. This arrangement allowed Darline to utilize her brother’s military benefits, a connection she described as initially unusual but ultimately logical. “I knew he was doing what he could to take care of me, and it was best for us,” she reflected.
The unmarried Graham once humorously addressed questions about who would serve as his first lady, responding, “Well, I’ve got a sister. She could play that role if necessary.” This lighthearted comment underscored the depth of their familial bond.
Broader Political Context
McMaster faces term limits and cannot pursue reelection in the current cycle. Meanwhile, President Trump has been actively involved in South Carolina politics, recently endorsing both Pamela Evette for lieutenant governor and Alan Wilson for attorney general. Evette subsequently lost a primary runoff to Wilson, while McMaster’s son, Henry McMaster Jr., declined consideration for the lieutenant governor position, stating that “now is simply not the right time for me to be considered.”
As the special primary approaches, several potential candidates have emerged. Evette has reportedly been receiving inquiries about entering the race for Graham’s Senate seat, while other representatives, including Nancy Ma, are being mentioned as possible contenders. The political landscape in South Carolina continues to evolve as the state prepares for this significant transition in its congressional representation.
