“Our study provided validation to people who often feel isolated in their confusion,” said Abigail Vogeley, a research fellow and doctoral student at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. “They’re not alone in struggling with the healthcare system and medication labels. “Warnings are sometimes written differently or positioned in ways patients don’t expect,” noted Vogeley. “This creates a uniformity problem that affects how effectively they follow treatment plans.”

Dr. Michael Wolf, a professor of medicine and director of Northwestern’s Center for Applied Health Research on Aging, highlighted the challenge of conveying medical information within brief appointments. “Health literacy is essential for patients to use medications as intended, but it’s difficult to achieve when doctors have limited time and instructions are not clearly phrased,” he explained.

Jan Carney, president of the American College of Physicians, added that patients may feel hesitant to ask clarifying questions, leading to misunderstandings. “If they don’t feel comfortable querying their providers, the nuances of dosing or timing can be lost, which affects both the medication’s efficacy and the patient’s well-being,” she said.

Carney noted that even minor ambiguities can accumulate over time. “When patients take medication without food, or at the wrong time, it can reduce the drug’s effectiveness or increase side effects. These small missteps, if repeated, can significantly impact long-term health outcomes,” she explained.
