EastEnders baby emergency as in-agony Nicola is rushed to hospital
EastEnders baby emergency as Nicola faces hospital rush
High-stakes drama unfolds for club owner in dramatic new storyline
Next week’s EastEnders episode will feature intense moments for pregnant Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington), who is taken to the hospital after sudden, severe pain. The club owner, currently expecting her child with former Queen Vic landlord George Knight (Colin Salmon), is caught in a tense situation when her confrontation with Penny Branning (Kitty Castledine) leads to unexpected complications.
After realizing her son Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) might be the father of Penny’s unborn child instead of Vinny Panesar (Shiv Jalota), Nicola demands a DNA test from Penny, threatening to expose the secret if the results aren’t conclusive. As George’s new restaurant opens, Harry notices his mother’s distraction, prompting her to mention she hasn’t felt the baby move but doesn’t want to worry George.
Following her hospital visit, tests confirm the baby is healthy—but Nicola’s return to the Square brings another confrontation with Penny, which triggers more pain. She dismisses Harry’s concerns and hides her condition from George, choosing to go home instead. ‘Nicola is used to handling challenges alone and doesn’t want to add stress to George’s already difficult situation,’ explains Laura Doddington, who portrays the character.
‘She’s burdened by private worries, convincing herself they might not be serious. Having experienced false labor with both Harry and Barney, part of her believes these pains could be another false alarm,’ says Doddington.
As George’s restaurant launch event begins, he grows worried when Harry mentions Nicola’s absence. Unbeknownst to them, Nicola is already in labor back at No. 1, with contractions intensifying rapidly. George and Harry rush to her side, discovering her in agony and quickly taking her to the hospital.
There, Nicola reveals her anxiety about giving birth prematurely. Despite her efforts, complications arise, forcing an emergency caesarean. After welcoming a newborn girl, Nicola must isolate from her baby due to an infection, leaving her devastated. ‘This week shows a rare moment of vulnerability for Nicola, contrasting with her usual strong, protective demeanor,’ Doddington adds.
Meanwhile, George watches his newborn daughter, named Ivy, through an incubator in the NICU. The episode airs on Monday 30th March at 7.30pm on BBC One or streams from 6am on iPlayer.
