UK aircraft carrier given five days to be ready to deploy

UK Aircraft Carrier Readied for Rapid Deployment

The Royal Navy’s HMS Prince of Wales has been upgraded to a five-day readiness status, enabling it to depart Portsmouth within a shorter timeframe. Defence officials confirmed the shift, stating the carrier’s “notice to sail” has been reduced from 14 days to five. This move has sparked discussions about potential deployment to the Mediterranean, where British interests could face threats amid ongoing Middle Eastern tensions.

Trump’s Remarks on UK’s Delayed Response

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump voiced criticism of UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, accusing him of hesitating to send carriers to the region. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote:

“The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, maybe the Greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East.”

He added:

“That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer – But we will remember. We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!”

UK’s Strategic Deployments and Criticisms

The UK government has not yet committed to offensive operations against Iran. However, it has been accused of slow action in protecting Cyprus from enemy drones and missiles. Starmer refuted these claims, stating that Britain had already begun pre-deploying assets to the area, including military support in Qatar and Cyprus. A defence source noted that 400 extra personnel have been stationed in Cyprus to bolster air defence efforts.

Additional US Assets and Protests

Meanwhile, US B-1 Lancer bombers have arrived at RAF Fairford, signaling a growing US military presence. In a separate development, the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon is scheduled to join the region but will not be operational until next week. The HMS Prince of Wales, meanwhile, remains in Portsmouth undergoing routine maintenance, preparing for a future deployment to the North Atlantic and Arctic as part of Operation Firecrest.

Public Sentiment and Political Backlash

Anti-war demonstrations have drawn large crowds, with protesters criticizing both the US and UK for their involvement in the Middle East. In London, thousands marched toward the US Embassy, demanding an end to attacks on Iran and displaying slogans like “Hands off Iran” and “Stop Trump’s Wars.” Another group, gathering near the Iranian Embassy, advocated for a free and democratic Iran. While the focus was on Trump, demonstrators urged the UK to avoid uncritical support for US military actions.

Carrier’s Capabilities and Strategic Significance

HMS Prince of Wales, a formidable surface warship, measures over 900ft (280m) in length and can accommodate up to 24 F-35B stealth jets, along with helicopters and drones. With a daily range of 500 miles, it is designed to operate in remote regions. The Ministry of Defence also confirmed that US forces are utilizing UK bases for targeted defensive operations, reflecting a broader strategic alignment.
