“We could hear explosions coming from the fire and asked a police officer what it was we were hearing as we were driving away, and he told us it was a fighter jet crash and the explosions were ammunition,” Doornbos said.
The crash occurred roughly 130 miles north of Grand Rapids in a region that includes rural communities, open land and residential areas. The location of the wreckage near homes added urgency to the evacuation and response effort, though authorities said no one on the ground was injured in the initial impact.
