The 14th Judicial Circuit encompasses Colleton County and surrounding areas in South Carolina’s Lowcountry region. This geographic designation is significant because it determines which courts have jurisdiction over criminal proceedings and which potential jurors must be drawn from for trials.

Original Testimony Can Be Used Under Specific Conditions

In addition to the venue decision, McCaslin ruled that portions of Murdaugh’s testimony from his first murder trial may be admitted in the retrial, provided they meet evidentiary standards. The defense had argued against using any of the prior testimony, particularly sections addressing financial crimes that the South Carolina Supreme Court previously indicated received excessive attention during the initial proceedings.

Murdaugh’s Legal Journey Continues
