Influencer caught smuggling £150,000 of cannabis back from Thailand
Social Media Star Smuggled £150,000 in Cannabis from Thailand, Faces Jail Time
A prominent social media influencer attempted to bring over £150,000 in cannabis through Edinburgh Airport and is now set to face prison time. Ellie Crampsie, 23, was apprehended in April last year upon her return to the UK from a holiday in Thailand, where she was allegedly found carrying over 17kg of the drug in her luggage.
Based in Broomhouse, Glasgow, Crampsie operates her own beauty venture while also managing event promotions for a large following on social media platforms. On March 26, she entered a guilty plea for her involvement in the supply of cannabis to others at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
Emma Laing, the prosecutor, stated that Crampsie was intercepted by Border Force personnel at Edinburgh Airport as she returned from Thailand, traveling through Paris. ‘She was questioned about her travel plans and confirmed her journey from Thailand, according to Laing.’
During the proceedings, it was revealed that 17 sealed cannabis packages, totaling between £115,000 and £151,000 of the class-B substance, were discovered in her luggage. Crampsie’s defense counsel highlighted that the individual had the backing of her parents, who were present in court on the day of the hearing.
Sheriff Graeme Watson announced that sentencing would be postponed to secure a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty assessment. He emphasized that the adjournment does not indicate any prior judgment, adding that all possible sentencing options remain available for consideration at the next hearing.
Crampsie’s case follows a similar incident involving Poppie Kudieersky, a 22-year-old mother who avoided incarceration after attempting to smuggle £285,000 worth of cannabis from Thailand to the UK. Kudieersky claimed that drug traffickers would have killed her child if she didn’t agree to carry the cannabis as a mule.
She was arrested at Manchester Airport when customs officers stopped her companion, seizing two suitcases containing 28.5kg of the drug. ArrowMORE: Four arrested for ‘murder’ of young woman found in street with serious injuries
