Pittsburgh doctor killed after overnight home attack; wife remains hospitalized
Goldlaner.com – A Pittsburgh pediatrician was killed and his wife was seriously wounded after an intruder entered their home early Thursday and attacked the couple in their bedroom, authorities said. The case has left investigators examining why the family was targeted and whether the accused attacker had any prior connection to the doctor.
Dr. Idris Evans, 46, a pediatric critical care physician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, died after the assault. His wife, whose name has not been released publicly, was hospitalized with multiple stab wounds and was listed in stable condition Saturday.
Police have charged 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway with criminal homicide, aggravated assault and burglary in connection with the attack. As of Saturday afternoon, he had not yet been arraigned.
Children escaped to a neighbor’s home
Investigators believe Hemingway entered the Evans residence through a rear window, then made his way to the couple’s third-floor bedroom. The criminal complaint alleges that he began stabbing Evans and his wife while they were in bed after midnight Thursday.
The couple fought back as the attack unfolded. Their two children, ages 8 and 12, were told by their mother to run to a neighboring home. Both children reached safety.
Despite her injuries, Evans’ wife was able to get to a neighbor’s residence for help. Emergency personnel later found Evans severely hurt on the bedroom floor. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Hemingway allegedly left through a back door. A police canine team later located him in a nearby yard, where authorities say he had been hiding.
Evans’ wife told investigators that the attacker demanded car keys, though police said there was no indication that he attempted to take the family’s vehicle.
Investigators seek to establish motive
The alleged attacker’s motive has not been established. During the assault, Evans’ wife recalled Hemingway making several statements involving God and saying that he was God.
“utterances about ‘God’”
She also said her husband addressed the man as “Elijah.” However, she did not recognize the suspect herself. Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph said she was uncertain whether Hemingway had identified himself before Evans used that name.
That detail is central to the continuing investigation: authorities are working to determine whether the attack was random, whether Hemingway knew Evans, or whether another explanation connects the suspect to the family.
Additional allegations from Wilkinsburg
While detectives investigated the fatal stabbing, they were contacted by police in Wilkinsburg about a sexual assault reported from Wednesday morning, one day before the attack on the Evans family.
A woman told investigators she had been walking toward an alley when an unknown man sexually assaulted her. Police said they recovered several items that they say link Hemingway to that incident, including the victim’s cellphone, which had been reported stolen.
Hemingway now also faces charges including rape, sexual assault and robbery in that case. Those allegations remain separate from the homicide case and have not been resolved in court.
Previous cases in Pennsylvania and Florida
Pennsylvania court records show Hemingway has faced criminal charges in Allegheny County dating to 2016. Those records include a prior finding of guilt for disorderly conduct and traffic-related violations.
In July, he was arrested in a burglary and theft case and was released on nonmonetary bail. A hearing in that matter is scheduled for October 1.
He also faced two separate battery-related cases in Florida last year. In March 2025, police in Deltona arrested Hemingway following an argument with an ex-girlfriend with whom he lived. The case involved a domestic battery charge, and court records show that Hemingway entered a no-contest plea. The available information did not make the final disposition clear.
The following month, Hemingway was arrested at a Wells Fargo branch in Deltona after an encounter involving bank employees and Volusia County sheriff’s deputies. A police affidavit stated that he punched, pushed and kicked deputies. The same affidavit said he repeatedly described himself as the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun.
He pleaded no contest to three counts of battery on a law enforcement officer and to resisting arrest. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said he received credit for time served after being held involuntarily for mental health treatment until he was found competent to proceed with the criminal case.
A family and community facing unanswered questions
The killing of Evans has drawn attention not only because of the violence inside a family home, but also because the couple’s children were present and had to escape during the attack. Their mother’s actions allowed them to reach a neighbor safely while she sought help despite serious injuries.
For now, the criminal allegations against Hemingway will move through the court system while police continue reviewing evidence from the home, the nearby yard where he was arrested and the separate Wilkinsburg investigation. The central unanswered question remains why Evans and his family were attacked.
Authorities have not publicly identified a confirmed relationship between Hemingway and Evans. The investigation is ongoing.
