China’s Highest Bridge Is Redefining Mountain Tourism
Goldlaner.com – High above the Beipan River in southwestern China, a bridge built to speed up travel has become a destination in its own right. The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, which opened in September 2025, rises 625 meters above the river in Guizhou province and holds the Guinness World Records designation as the world’s highest bridge.
Its original purpose was practical: crossing this mountainous canyon once required a journey of roughly two hours. The new route reduces that trip to about two minutes, linking rural communities with the broader road system. Yet the bridge’s extraordinary height, vast setting and engineering scale have also turned it into a major attraction for visitors seeking dramatic views and high-altitude adventure.
From its opening through August 2026, local officials recorded about 3.3 million visitors. The numbers illustrate how a piece of transport infrastructure can quickly reshape the identity of a remote region.
A suspension bridge above the clouds
The nearly 2.9-kilometer span cuts across a canyon surrounded by Guizhou’s rugged peaks. Its two large teal towers stand over a gorge that seems to sink into the distant mountains, giving the bridge a striking presence even from far below.
For motorists, the crossing may last only minutes. For tourists, however, the experience is designed to be much more than a drive. Visitors can enter sections of the structure and stand on glass viewing platforms, where the canyon floor appears hundreds of meters beneath their feet. There is also an exposed walkway beneath the roadway, allowing people wearing safety harnesses to travel along the bridge’s side while open air stretches below.
The scale is difficult to grasp from photographs alone. The roadway sits almost nine times higher over the water than San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. At that height, the landscape becomes part of the attraction: mountains roll outward toward the horizon, villages appear tiny within the canyon, and the bridge itself feels less like an ordinary road than a destination suspended in the sky.
Thrill-seekers take the leap
The bridge’s most dramatic offering is its bungee jump. Before a jump, staff carry out safety inspections as participants are secured in harnesses on a platform beneath the roadway. Then comes the moment of commitment: a step into open space above the canyon.
One young visitor plunged for seven seconds toward the canyon floor before the bungee cord pulled him back upward. Spectators gathered nearby with phones raised, watching the drop and responding with applause after the rebound.
Such scenes have helped establish the bridge as an adventure site as well as an engineering landmark. Glass platforms, elevated walkways and bungee jumping offer visitors experiences that ordinary road bridges rarely provide. Rather than simply passing through the mountains, tourists can spend time inside the structure and see the canyon from perspectives unavailable to drivers.
New opportunities in canyon villages
The effects of the bridge are also visible beyond its towers and observation decks. Communities in and around the canyon are gaining access to a larger stream of travelers, creating openings for small tourism businesses.
For Lin Guoquan, the change brought an opportunity to return home. After working as a chef in Yunnan, Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces, he went back to Guizhou and began converting older properties—including his grandparents’ house—into guest accommodation. His business was built on the expectation that the bridge would draw visitors to a place that had previously received little outside attention.
“When we first opened, we only had nine rooms. Now we have expanded to 52, and we still don’t have enough rooms for all our guests,” Lin said.
His growth reflects the sharp increase in visitor activity around the bridge. During the nine-day Chinese New Year holiday in February 2026, the bridge’s service area recorded more than 300,000 visits—a total larger than the population of Buffalo, New York.
Lin has also developed a substantial audience on Douyin, China’s counterpart to TikTok. With more than 100,000 followers, he livestreams views of his village with the bridge visible above it. The videos have become another route through which travelers find the area, reserve rooms and seek advice for their trips.
“Lots of people book rooms at my homestay after watching my videos. They ask me for travel advice,” he said.
Building a digital bridge, too
The rise of tourism has made digital access increasingly important. Scenic roads and a famous bridge can bring travelers closer, but guests also need reliable mobile connections to navigate, make reservations, share videos and communicate while visiting rural mountain areas.
Mobile coverage in the canyon had previously been limited. China Mobile, the state-owned telecommunications operator, and technology company Huawei have expanded the network by adding base stations intended to support rising visitor numbers.
“What people see is this mighty physical bridge,” said Zhou Jianguo, a member of Huawei’s China strategy and business development division. “Yet a bridge in the digital world is equally necessary.”
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge shows how infrastructure can produce effects well beyond faster transport. It brings distant communities closer to major road networks, while its spectacle attracts travelers who might otherwise never visit this part of Guizhou. In the process, local residents are finding ways to turn scenery, hospitality and online visibility into new livelihoods.
For visitors, the bridge offers an unusual combination: a record-setting feat of construction, a sweeping mountain viewpoint and an adrenaline destination. For the communities below, its value may lie in something simpler—the chance to be seen, reached and connected.
