World’s best keeper? Raya helps Arsenal get back on track

Arsenal’s David Raya has been instrumental in recent matches, particularly highlighted by his critical performance in the 1-0 Champions League win over Sporting. The goalkeeper’s efforts were pivotal, as his four crucial saves helped secure the victory, culminating in a late goal from Kai Havertz. This display has sparked discussions about his standing as one of the top goalkeepers in the world, according to his teammates.

Raya’s season has been marked by consistency, with seven clean sheets in the Champions League alone. His ability to maintain this level of performance has positioned him as the Gunners’ clear first-choice keeper. Despite Arsenal’s back-to-back losses earlier in the campaign, Raya remained on the sidelines, with Mikel Arteta opting for Kepa Arrizabalaga in those matches. The decision was questioned after a defensive error in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, which allowed Pep Guardiola’s side to take an early lead.

Raya’s latest outing, however, proved his value. In the match against Sporting, he made a vital early save against Maxi Araujo, tipping the shot onto the crossbar. Later in the game, he executed three critical stops to preserve the draw before Havertz’s decisive goal. “Unbelievable” was Kai Havertz’s reaction to Raya’s performance, stating,

“I think [he is] still underestimated in the world of football but for me, the last two seasons, the best keeper in the world.” He added, “He’s outstanding, he’s saved us so many times and we’re very glad to have him.”

With 22 clean sheets in 41 appearances across all competitions, Raya has surpassed many in Europe’s top leagues, including Yann Sommer of Inter, who trails him by four. His leadership role at Arsenal extends beyond goalkeeping, as he contributes significantly with his passing and decision-making. “The keeper in the last few years has changed and evolved rapidly,” Arteta noted. “The amount of things that we ask him to do, it’s a lot. But many positions have very similar situations and demands right now, and the players have to adapt to that.”

Raya’s contributions in the Premier League are equally impressive, with 15 clean sheets in 31 matches this season—the highest in the division. His shared Golden Glove trophy with Matz Sels in the 2024-25 campaign underscores his impact, though Arsenal hopes to translate his individual accolades into team success. “He’s extraordinary, magnificent, incredible,” Arteta said.

“I don’t know the right adjective. We are so happy to have him.”

Raya’s acrobatic saves and strategic play have become a cornerstone for Arsenal’s attacking progress. His performance in the Champions League, which now includes seven clean sheets for the club, highlights his ability to elevate the team’s fortunes in high-stakes games. As the Gunners approach their European quarter-final, Raya’s form suggests he is a key player in their quest for silverware.
