Max Verstappen gets British journalist THROWN OUT of a press conference after taking exception to his questions and ‘stupid grin’ last year
Max Verstappen ejects British journalist from press conference following past dispute over questioning and ‘stupid grin’
During a press conference ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, Max Verstappen abruptly dismissed a British reporter from the Red Bull hospitality area after a tense confrontation. The four-time world champion instructed the journalist, Giles Richards of the Guardian, to exit the room three times before proceeding to answer questions. “I’m not speaking before he leaves,” Verstappen declared, signaling his frustration.
Historical tension resurfaces
The altercation traced back to a disagreement in Abu Dhabi last December, the concluding race of the 2025 season. Verstappen had narrowly lost his fifth consecutive title to Lando Norris by two points. Richards had previously questioned whether Verstappen’s collision with George Russell in Spain, which cost him nine points, was a key factor in his defeat.
“You forget about all the other stuff that happened in my season. The only thing you mention is Barcelona. I knew that would come. And you’re giving me a stupid grin now. It’s part of racing. You live and learn.”
In the recent press conference, Verstappen spotted Richards as he prepared for his routine briefing. The Dutch driver swiftly ordered him to leave, reigniting the conflict. When asked to depart, Richards responded with surprise: “Seriously?”
The exchange escalated briefly as Richards moved to retrieve his equipment. He challenged Verstappen: “You want me to leave? It’s just the question I asked you in Abu Dhabi? About Spain?”
After a 30-second standoff, Richards exited the room, rolling his eyes. Verstappen then addressed the remaining media for the next 10 minutes, his earlier irritation evident but his focus redirected to the current event.
