Wireless Festival cancelled after Kanye West blocked from coming to UK
Wireless Festival Cancellation Linked to Kanye West’s UK Entry Block
The Wireless Festival, set for this summer, has been officially canceled due to Kanye West’s inability to enter the United Kingdom. The government denied him a travel permit, citing public backlash against his planned performance at the London event. West, who has made a series of controversial antisemitic, racist, and pro-Nazi remarks in recent years, now goes by the name Ye.
According to the festival’s statement, the Home Office revoked West’s ETA, preventing his entry. This led to the cancellation of the event, with refunds issued to all ticket holders. The statement also noted that multiple stakeholders were consulted before confirming West’s participation, and no issues were raised at the time. It emphasized the festival’s commitment to addressing antisemitism, stating that West acknowledged the need for more than just words to make amends.
“Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent, and we recognize the real and personal impact these issues have had. As Ye said today, he understands that words alone are not enough, and he still hopes to begin a conversation with the Jewish community in the UK.”
Controversy Over Stakeholder Engagement
A representative from the Campaign Against Antisemitism criticized the decision, questioning the consultation process. “How did it come to this? Apparently ‘no concerns were highlighted’ about Kanye West at the time of the booking. Who were they consulting? A wall? That’s what happens when the only stakeholders you speak to are those who stand to make a profit,” the spokesperson said.
The group also pointed out the inconsistency in the festival’s stance, noting that just hours before the cancellation, the promoter had downplayed West’s recent Nazi declaration. “It’s nice that now Wireless is saying ‘Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent’ when just a few hours ago the festival promoter was saying we all need to forgive Kanye for declaring himself a full-blown Nazi only recently,” they added.
Kanye West’s Response and Festival Promoter’s Defense
West expressed willingness to meet with the Jewish community, stating he would “be grateful” to engage in dialogue after the controversy over his booking. “I know words aren’t enough,” he said. “I’ll have to show change through my actions. If you’re open, I’m here.”
Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, which organizes the Wireless Festival, claimed Jewish groups had refused a meeting after the event was announced. “They have refused a meeting,” he said, adding that the approach had been made over the past few days. However, a spokesperson for the Board of Deputies clarified that their organization had accepted the request for a meeting but remained firm in their demand to rescind West’s invitation.
Benn also highlighted West’s mental health, suggesting it played a role in his recent comments. “Mental health is not something that disappears overnight,” he argued. “People suffer from psychotic or bipolar episodes for many years, and I think people are forgetting that.” Despite this, the decision to cancel the festival has now been made, removing the choice from both West and the organizers.
