NYPD Officer Passes Away During Deployment in Iran Conflict
New York City police officer Major Sorffly Davius died on Friday while stationed at Camp Buehring in Kuwait, as confirmed by state and city officials. The incident occurred during his participation in the U.S.-led military operation against Iran, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who honored Davius as an “esteemed citizen-soldier” and a devoted family man.
“Today, and always, we keep his family in our thoughts and prayers,” said the NYPD in a statement shared online. “May we never forget Officer Davius’ sacrifice and may his memory be a blessing.”
Davius, a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard, had served in the 42nd Infantry Division before joining the NYPD in 2014. His assignment to the 79th Precinct marked the beginning of his career in law enforcement, which was characterized by dedication and service. Prior to his overseas mission, he contributed to Joint Task Force Empire Shield, a unit tasked with securing New York’s critical sites from potential threats.
“His life is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by our National Guard members, who balance their roles as citizens, first responders, and soldiers,” Hochul added in a separate statement.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch joined in paying tribute to Davius, emphasizing his commitment to service. “His career was defined by service — to his country and to New York City,” they stated in a joint announcement on Saturday.
NBC News has contacted the National Guard and U.S. Central Command for further remarks. As of now, seven U.S. military personnel have lost their lives in the joint operation targeting Iran. Six of these casualties occurred in Kuwait, with one additional death reported in Saudi Arabia following an attack on March 1. U.S. Central Command confirmed the latest fatality on Sunday.
