Boy, 14, dies in e-bike crash with car as parents warn ‘this is reason why they are banned from the roads’
A 14-year-old boy tragically lost his life after a collision involving an electric motorbike and a car in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The incident occurred on Newbold Road last Thursday at approximately 8:30pm, leaving the family devastated and urging caution for young riders.
Finley Dawson, the teenager who succumbed to his injuries, was riding the e-bike with a 15-year-old friend as his passenger. Both were thrown from the vehicle during the crash, but Finley’s condition proved fatal. His companion is currently hospitalized in a serious yet stable state.
Derbyshire police confirmed that the car driver is being regarded as a witness and is cooperating with investigations. No arrests have been made at this time. The families of both boys have since released a statement emphasizing the dangers of operating electric motorbikes on public roads.
“There is a reason these bikes are banned from the road, and devastatingly Finley has paid the ultimate price in losing his life,” they stated. “His friend has sustained serious injuries and has to come to terms with growing up without his best mate. Although the thrill of riding an electric bike on the road seems exciting, it can also be fatal.”
According to UK regulations, individuals must be at least 16 and possess a valid driving license to ride electric motorbikes on roads. However, electric bicycles with pedals can be used by anyone over 14, provided their power output does not exceed 250 watts. The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of these rules.
