Micah Lee, a resident of the same apartment complex, described an unsettling early-morning sequence on Sunday. His cats began behaving erratically, prompting him to peer out into the hallway, where he noticed a large gathering of people. He retreated into his unit but heard through the door that someone had collapsed.

“I heard through the door that a person had collapsed,” Lee said.

Lee later received an email from the property manager instructing residents to refrain from speaking with journalists.
