Trump says FBI is ‘wasting their time’ if they’re pursuing conspiracy theories in Graham death investigation
Trump Dismisses Conspiracy Theories in Graham Death Probe as FBI Investigation Continues
Trump says FBI is wasting their – President Donald Trump expressed skepticism Tuesday regarding potential conspiracy theories surrounding Senator Lindsey Graham’s passing, suggesting that federal investigators may be unnecessarily complicating the matter. Speaking to reporters, the president characterized the FBI’s efforts as potentially misdirected if they are focusing on speculative narratives rather than straightforward medical explanations.
Medical Findings Point to Natural Causes
According to four law enforcement officials who provided information to CNN, current evidence does not suggest that Graham’s death resulted from any unnatural or suspicious circumstances. One official explained that local police departments routinely conduct standard reviews following the death of public officials, and the FBI has simply made its capabilities available should additional support become necessary.
The medical examiner’s preliminary findings indicate that Graham experienced an aortic dissection—a serious condition involving a tear in the major artery that typically proves life-threatening. This diagnosis aligns with accounts from individuals who interacted with the senator in the hours before his death on Saturday.
Conspiracy Theories Emerge Online
Despite the medical evidence, various commentators have proposed alternative explanations for Graham’s passing. Laura Loomer, a prominent far-right activist, highlighted that Graham had recently returned from Ukraine, where he advocated for additional sanctions against Russia, before his death occurred.
Republican Senator John Cornyn requested that a toxicology report be made public to eliminate any possibility of foul play. Meanwhile, some members of the law enforcement community believed that FBI Director Kash Patel inadvertently intensified speculation with a cryptic message posted on X after Graham’s death, in which the director stated the bureau was “assisting local authorities and has made every necessary resource available.”
“I know there’s all sorts of conspiracy theories going along, and I don’t think the FBI — I think the FBI is wasting their time if they’re doing that,” Trump said when asked why the FBI was looking into the death or if he had gotten any updates.
FBI Agents Visit Graham’s Residence
Public uncertainty increased when FBI agents were observed entering Graham’s Washington, DC home on Monday. This visit appeared somewhat contradictory given that sources had previously indicated no signs of wrongdoing. Neither Patel nor the FBI has issued a public explanation regarding the director’s statement or the agents’ visit.
CNN sources clarified that Patel’s social media post was intended to reference the standard review process that law enforcement agencies follow after a legislator dies. Much of the publicly available information from people who spoke with Graham shortly before his death does not suggest any suspicious activity.
Witness Accounts Support Medical Explanation
Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville shared that one of his staff members was present with Graham’s scheduler on Saturday evening when the South Carolina Republican called to report chest pains—a potential symptom of aortic dissection—and requested that emergency services be contacted.
“Lindsey called, called basically, said, ‘Listen, I’m having chest pains. You know, I need to do something,'” Tuberville told reporters on Monday, relaying the account of those involved.
CNN previously reported that emergency responders were sent to a DC address for Graham around 8:30 pm ET based on a chest pain report, according to dispatch audio from Broadcastify. Multiple individuals noted that Graham appeared normal during their conversations with him before his death.
Trump mentioned that he had spoken with Graham by phone prior to the senator’s passing, and Graham indicated he was fatigued from travel but otherwise seemed well. Senator Katie Britt told CNN she also conversed with Graham over the weekend—after her conversation with Trump—and found him enthusiastic about securing White House support for the Russian sanctions legislation. She reported sensing nothing unusual.
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal provided a comparable description to CNN. “He sounded absolutely fine,” Blumenthal stated, noting he had spoken with Graham on both Friday and Saturday. “In fact, better than fine.”
Trump Comments on Medical Condition
On Tuesday, Trump remarked that an aortic tear is “very hard to detect” and mentioned that White House physicians had explained the diagnosis to him. “When that bursts, which it did — it burst — there’s not much, so I don’t see a lot of evil there,” he said. He also expressed personal regret for his friend, adding, “I wish he took better care of himself.”
