ICE Officer Fatally Shoots Man in Houston Traffic Stop

What Happened During the Confrontation

ICE officer fatally shoots man while – An ICE officer fatally shoots man while conducting a routine traffic stop in Houston on Tuesday, the agency confirmed. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national living in the U.S. without legal authorization, was attempting to avoid arrest when the situation turned deadly. According to an ICE spokesperson, agents pulled over Salgado Araujo and began trying to apprehend him. The confrontation escalated quickly, leading to the fatal shooting.

Agency officials stated that Salgado Araujo ignored several verbal commands before driving his vehicle into one of the responding law enforcement cars. “Salgado Araujo weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense,” the statement read. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but died from his wounds shortly after.

The DHS Office of the Inspector General is leading the investigation into the shooting. Meanwhile, the FBI’s Houston field office is determining whether a federal law enforcement officer was assaulted during the incident. Both agencies are expected to release additional findings as their reviews continue.

Community Outcry and Political Response

This marks the second ICE-related shooting in less than a week, occurring amid heightened immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump’s deportation program. The death of Salgado Araujo has sparked calls for transparency from Texas Democratic lawmakers and immigrant rights activists alike.

“We demand a full, independent investigation, the immediate release of all available evidence, and accountability for the wrongful death of Lorenzo. The public deserves the truth, and the Salgado family deserves justice,” the League of United Latin American Citizens declared on Tuesday.

Rep. Sylvia Garcia, who represents the Houston district where the incident occurred, stressed the importance of an independent review. “ICE has released an initial account, but the facts must be independently and thoroughly investigated, including the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force,” she said on X. Garcia added that all footage, communications, and physical evidence should be preserved for examination.

Rep. Christian Menefee, another Houston representative, echoed these concerns. “ICE’s actions across the country have caused them to lose the faith and confidence of communities,” he noted on X, emphasizing that all investigative information must be made public.

The Victim and Precedent Cases

Ronaldo Salgado, the victim’s son, shared a tribute on Facebook describing his father as a “hardworking Mexican man” employed in construction. Salgado Araujo had lived in the United States for nearly 35 years and was in the process of securing his work permit through legal channels. “He was on his way to work, picking up his workers,” Ronaldo Salgado explained. “My father did not deserve this.” A news conference is scheduled for Wednesday.

CNN has requested comments from Houston Mayor John Whitmire and local police. Over the past year, multiple immigration enforcement operations nationwide have ended in fatalities, with early official accounts sometimes challenged by video footage. Among the most notable cases is the shooting of 23-year-old U.S. citizen Ruben Ray Martinez last year during a traffic encounter, and the January shooting of 37-year-old U.S. citizen Renee Good in Minneapolis. In both cases, DHS asserted that the victims tried to strike agents with their vehicles, though witnesses and local officials contested those claims. Additionally, in May, a former federal agent was arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault and making false statements under oath concerning the nonfatal shooting of a Venezuelan man in Minneapolis in January.
