Coachella Kicks Off with Sabrina Carpenter and Surprise Guests

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival began its 2024 edition on Friday, featuring an unexpected twist as pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter opened with a Hollywood-inspired performance. The event, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, included a surprise appearance by actress Susan Sarandon, who portrayed an older version of Carpenter during her set. This creative segment, part of the festival’s thematic flair, was joined by comedian Will Ferrell and actor Sam Elliott, who played supporting roles in the storyline.

Weather conditions posed challenges during the opening day. Strong winds disrupted the schedule, leading to the cancellation of DJ Anyma’s set following Carpenter’s performance. The festival organizers shared a statement on Instagram:

“Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma’s stage build, he is unable to perform tonight. Coachella and Anyma have made this decision together with your safety as the priority.”

The National Weather Service had predicted wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour, prompting an air quality advisory for the region from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning.

As part of her debut as headliner, Carpenter transformed the stage into a cinematic scene, dubbing it “Sabrinawood.” Her set opened with a short film where she was pulled over by Sam Elliott, who then released her. Later, Will Ferrell joined the stage in a comedic role as an electrician. Additional Friday performers included KATSEYE, a global girl group, and Disclosure, a British artist. Saturday’s lineup will feature Justin Bieber, with Karol G scheduled for Sunday. A range of UK acts, such as Wet Leg, Lambrini Girls, Little Simz, and FKA Twigs, will also perform. The festival’s schedule repeats next weekend, continuing its annual tradition since 2002.

Indio, the host city, reported that daily attendance at the event exceeds 100,000 people over two weekends. The weather advisory highlights potential risks for sensitive individuals, warning that windblown dust may lead to health concerns. Despite the disruptions, the festival maintained its energetic atmosphere, blending music with theatrical elements to captivate audiences.
