Search Expands After Escaped Tennessee Inmate’s Truck Is Found in Illinois
Goldlaner.com – A manhunt for convicted murderer Jacob Morley has widened beyond Tennessee after the truck he allegedly stole following his prison escape was discovered abandoned in southern Illinois.
Morley, 28, remains missing after the white 2008 Ford F-350 was located early Tuesday in Marion, Illinois. The truck carried Tennessee license plates and had been taken in Lake County shortly after Morley left the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee.
Investigators have not disclosed where Morley went after abandoning the vehicle. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said finding him remains an urgent law-enforcement priority, and agencies in nearby states have been alerted.
Illinois State Police said it was aware of the case and had offered assistance to Tennessee investigators. The discovery of the truck in Marion, a city with roughly 17,600 residents, has heightened concern among people living there.
“It’s a scary time.”
Bridget Lawler, a Marion attorney, said residents were taking extra precautions.
“Everybody is locking their car doors now. I know my husband checked all of our doors before he went to bed.”
Another resident, Lachelle Hartline, said information about the abandoned truck appeared to spread through social media rather than through an alert received locally.
“No one that I have talked to has mentioned seeing it either. We only got information through Facebook.”
Escape From Northwest Correctional Complex
Morley escaped late Sunday from the Northwest Correctional Complex, a state prison in Tiptonville. Prison personnel discovered he was gone at about 11:30 p.m., the Tennessee Department of Correction said.
Security video later showed Morley breaching the facility’s perimeter fence and leaving while dressed in his prison uniform. Early Monday, he stole the Ford pickup in Lake County, investigators said.
The interstate search reflects the challenge facing authorities once an escaped inmate has access to transportation. The abandoned truck may establish part of Morley’s route, but it does not indicate where he traveled next or whether he received help after leaving Tennessee.
Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and to provide information that could assist with locating Morley. He has been added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Most Wanted list. A total reward of $15,000 is available through the Tennessee Governor’s Office, the TBI and the U.S. Marshals Service for information leading to his arrest.
Life Sentence in Cody Birchfield Killing
Morley was serving a life sentence after convictions for first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, evading arrest and vandalism. The case centered on the death of Cody Birchfield, who was first reported missing in February 2022.
Birchfield’s body was found weeks after his disappearance in a box beneath Morley’s home. For relatives, news of Morley’s escape has revived grief that had been partially eased by his conviction and sentence.
One of Birchfield’s cousins, who requested anonymity because of safety concerns, said the life sentence had brought the family a limited measure of comfort.
“A small sense of closure and the reassurance that justice had been served.”
That sense of security was shaken by the escape, the cousin said, reopening the family’s “deepest wounds.” The relative urged anyone with meaningful information to come forward, while asking that public attention not lose sight of Birchfield himself.
“Above all, we want Cody to be remembered not for the tragedy of his death, but for the warmth, kindness, and decency of his life.”
A second cousin, also speaking anonymously for safety reasons, said the family is especially worried about Birchfield’s father and sister, who still live in the same area.
“If that man can do that to my cousin, what’s he going to do to the next individual?”
Questions for Tennessee Corrections
Morley is the second inmate to escape from Tennessee Department of Correction custody during October. The department has faced added scrutiny after its commissioner resigned following the botched execution and hospitalization last month of Christa Pike, who has since returned to a maximum-security prison.
The search now involves local, state and federal partners as investigators attempt to determine Morley’s movements after the truck was left in Marion. Officials have not publicly described a confirmed destination, and the discovery of the vehicle does not mean he remains in Illinois.
For residents in communities connected to the case, the search has created understandable anxiety. The most useful public response is to remain attentive, avoid approaching anyone believed to be Morley, and share credible information with law enforcement. The investigation continues as authorities seek to bring the escaped inmate back into custody.
