The Carlson Question

The most charged moment came when Coleman steered the conversation toward media strategy, asking how Vance decides which platforms to inhabit. The answer opened a door onto Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host who has argued publicly that the United States should abandon Israel as an ally. Coleman noted that Carlson, along with Megyn Kelly, Joe Rogan, and Nick Fuentes, “have platformed antisemites,” a characterization that landed with particular force in a room full of Jewish political operatives.

“I recognize a lot of people in this room might disagree with things that Tucker Carlson or Megyn Kelly or Joe Rogan has said,” Vance acknowledged, before drawing a sharp line between Rogan and Fuentes, calling them “very, very different” figures.

The distinction is not trivial. Fuentes, a White nationalist and Holocaust denier, was hosted by President Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in 2022, an appearance that generated significant controversy within the Jewish community. Vance defended his broader media-engagement strategy by arguing that Republicans must be “willing to go everywhere and bring our message anywhere and to any person,” a philosophy that has drawn both praise and criticism within the party.

Shabbos Kestenbaum, a Gen Z Jewish activist present at the event, told reporters that Vance “totally deflected” on the Carlson issue and predicted the former Fox host would “continue to dog” the vice president in much the way far-left streamer Hasan Piker has been linked to El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate race. Carlson himself did not respond to a request for comment on the RJC appearance. Notably, Vance has declined to publicly disavow Carlson even after Trump had a falling out with the podcaster over the Iran war and dismissed him as “totally irrelevant.” Carlson has since apologized for having backed Trump’s position.

A Party Without a Clear Front-Runner

The RJC gathering arrived amid a period of genuine uncertainty about who will lead the Republican ticket in 2028. Senator Ted Cruz recently stated that the party has not coalesced around Vance and that a “full discussion” about the party’s governing principles will occur before the next election.
